Day 3 – Leh to Turtuk via Nubra Valley (200km)
On this day, we set out on an unforgettable journey into the fabled Nubra Valley, crossing the legendary Khardung La Pass at 5,602 meters – one of the highest motorable roads in the world. The ride over this iconic pass rewards us with sweeping mountain vistas and a true sense of adventure at the roof of the Himalayas.
Descending into Nubra, the landscape transforms dramatically. Along the way, we encounter the serene presence of the Maitreya Buddha, ancient sanctums, and the rare sight of the double-humped Bactrian camels – a unique reminder of the Silk Route heritage. Our journey continues all the way to Turtuk, the last village of India, where Balti traditions and warm hospitality open a window into a culture shaped by both history and remoteness.
We spend the night in Turtuk, at an altitude of 3,100 meters above sea level, surrounded by a blend of rugged mountains and vibrant village life.
Day 4 – Turtuk to Pangong Lake (320km)
With every new day, the road unfolds deeper into the Himalayas – revealing fresh landscapes, ancient cultures, and moments of adventure that stay with you forever.
After breakfast in the remote village of Turtuk, we set off on one of the most breathtaking stretches of our expedition. The road follows the Shyok River as it winds its way through rugged gorges and wild valleys, where every turn reveals a new drama of towering cliffs and vast horizons.
The ride is long – 8 to 10 hours depending on road conditions and the number of stops – yet every moment is an adventure in itself. We cross remote high-altitude passes, ride along untamed rivers, and slowly approach a landscape unlike any other.
By late afternoon, the shimmering blue of Pangong Lake appears on the horizon – a surreal body of water stretching endlessly between India and Tibet, set at an altitude of 4,400 meters above sea level. As the light changes, the lake mirrors the colors of the sky, shifting from deep blue to turquoise and gold, a sight that feels almost otherworldly.
Here, on the shores of Pangong, we spend the night under a canopy of stars, surrounded by silence, beauty, and the sheer immensity of the Himalayas.
Day 5 – Pangong to Hanle (305km)
The day begins with a hearty buffet breakfast before we ride out from Pangong, tracing remote high-altitude roads through dramatic mountain scenery. Our route takes us across the stark beauty of Shantung and over the windswept heights of Rizang La Pass, where the silence of the Himalayas is broken only by the roar of our engines.
By late afternoon, we arrive in Hanle, one of the most secluded settlements in Ladakh, set at 4,400 meters above sea level. Known as a paradise for astronomers, Hanle offers some of the clearest night skies on the planet. Here, beneath an endless blanket of stars and galaxies, stands the Hanle Observatory, a beacon of science in the midst of raw wilderness.
The night in Hanle is as cold as it is magical – a rare chance to feel both the chill of the high desert and the wonder of the cosmos overhead.
Day 6 – Hanle to Tso Moriri (285km)
The morning in Hanle greets us with crisp air and endless horizons – the perfect beginning to one of the most extraordinary days of the expedition. From here, we ride towards Umling La Pass, standing at 5,798 meters (19,024 ft) above sea level – officially the highest motorable road in the world. Conquering this pass is a true once-in-a-lifetime achievement, where the thin air and the boundless views remind you that you are standing on the very roof of the planet.
Our journey then follows the route through Koyul–Demchok, where ancient watchtowers silently mark the frontier between India and China. The landscapes here are vast and untamed, with rugged bends like Tuloma Bend adding to the sense of adventure on these remote high-altitude trails.
By evening, we reach the enchanting shores of Tso Moriri Lake, a designated Ramsar Site of international ecological importance. Nestled at 4,500 meters, the lake is not only breathtakingly beautiful but also home to the elusive Black-necked Crane and other rare wildlife that thrive in this high-altitude ecosystem.
Overnight, we stay in cozy camp cottages by the lakeshore – a night of serenity surrounded by pristine waters, starry skies, and the silence of the Himalayas.
Day 7 – Tso Moriri to Leh (220km)
Our final riding day begins as we leave the tranquil shores of Tso Moriri Lake and follow the winding road towards Sokar Lake, a hidden gem surrounded by barren yet strikingly beautiful landscapes. Along the way, we pass through the Puga Valley, where steaming hot springs rise from the earth and the rhythm of life is shaped by the nomadic communities who call these highlands home. Their traditional camps and herds scattered across the valley offer a glimpse into a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.
The adventure continues as we climb towards Tanglang La Pass at 5,350 meters, one of the world’s highest motorable mountain passes, before descending onto the iconic NH03 highway that leads us back to Leh City.
Here, where our Himalayan journey comes full circle, we celebrate the miles ridden, the challenges conquered, and the unforgettable memories created along the highest roads on earth.
